If you’ve heard music before, you’ve heard the blues. It runs through opera and classical; it’s woven into spiritual and folk; it spans time and the human experience. But really, it came into its own, and its own name, in the early 1900s, a culmination of call-and-response work and spiritual songs using repetition and shared experience as a way of processing or challenging pain, humiliation, and oppression. The blues has a fairly strict structure instrumentally, but even those of us who don’t understand chords and progressions, well, you don't just hear the blues, you feel it.
