You have to hear bluegrass to know bluegrass. Even though it's a sub-genre of country, has ties to root music the world over, and shares themes with folk, the blues, rock, and others, the vocals and instrumentation of bluegrass are distinctive. Try a visual: outside a small house in a rural, mountainous setting; an extended family and lots friends, playing banjos, guitars, fiddles, mandolins, but also anything anyone can find to strum or drum on to contribute to the fun; instruments having lively conversations with one another. Some of that family has moved away, amplified and electrified, gotten comfortable in coffee shops, but they all brought that fundamental bluegrass sound along with them.
